Winter Weather Revs UK Gritters Into Action

You know the weather is cooling down when the gritters are warming up. Many of these salt-spreading vehicles are taking to the roads over the next few weeks to combat slippery surfaces caused by frost and ice.

As experts predict the coldest winter in five years, the country is stocking up on grit and salt. Nottinghamshire County Council has stockpiled 12,000 tonnes more salt than that which is recommended by the Government to better prepare for “the worst winter conditions”.

It has published the routes on which it will grit here and state it will “grit some additional routes during severe weather.”.

Doncaster Council has already added two new gritters to its fleet and have even taken to Twitter to ask the public to name them.

Cumbria County Council is dedicating £3.7m to its winter maintenance and some of its 33-strong fleet of gritters have already been in action. Councillor Keith Little says their gritting teams are “ready to treat roads day and night in Cumbria to help keep drivers safe during adverse weather.”.

Gritting is a vital precautionary treatment to reduce the risk of skidding which could lead to serious road incidents in the winter. However, pre-treated roads are still capable of becoming slippery when faced with heavy snow and black ice so drivers are urged to take care and drive only when necessary in severe weather.
